Got an early start today (7:10) and it was nippy out there! We went 50 miles, thru 8 locks, under several bridges and saw some very pretty countryside in upstate New York.
Arrived in Amsterdam at 2:00 and parked at Riverlink – nice new area with restaurant (eating on Catrina tonight,), pavilion, playground and entertainment (Saturday night concert series). It really warmed up this afternoon and is a beautiful evening.
Along the way today, we passed Fonda, NY where the Fonda clan hails from. Amsterdam is the hometown of actor, Kirk Douglas and also home to the professional wrestlers hall of fame. We are on the Mohawk River in the Mohawk Valley and this was once home to Mohawk Carpet Mills, but competition delayed this once vibrant business and then a fire finished off the mill buildings.
After Lock #18, we came to Little Falls and the walls were filled with folks (old and young alike) fishing – big contest going on and lots of trophies waiting closeby. They all waved and got some of them in this picture…
Just a few of the many fishermen along the wall in Little Falls
After we were settled here, a bride, groom and photographer came down to the dock for pictures! NEAT and what a pretty day for a wedding.
I’ve talked to Dad’s nurse and my Aunt Marian called – Dad is about the same. Has wanted to get dressed each day and eating about 50% of his meals. I miss talking to him….
Liam got a very good report yesterday at the ENT regarding his recent new tubes, adenoid removal, etc. Can’t believe school starts this next week.
We walked to St. Stanislaus Church for 4:00 Mass. What a magnificent church (all in its original splendor) and such a neat priest – big Polish congregation. Father said that one year ago tomorrow, he came here for his new assignment and what a wonderful year it’s been. Last weekend they brought back the parish festival after 7 years and kicked off the celebrating with a Polka Mass??? Now that would’ve been a neat experience!
I am so in awe of our amazing technology – got an e-mail tonight from my friend, Anita who is vacationing in Helsinki, Finland!
Not sure what tomorrow will bring – rain is in the forecast for the next 3 days! We have 37miles and 10 locks to go until we’re in Albany and that will end the Erie Canal System!
