Monday, January 31

Hard to believe we're having such gorgeous weather when the "Monster Storm" is coming to so much of the country.  Thinking of Bob and Linda traveling this week (they flew home today) for the funeral of Jennifer's father-in-law.   And friends coming to FL tomorrow....praying for everyone's safe arrivals!

We drove to Venice (my very favorite Florida town) and while I shopped, Mark ran some errands and read.   Met my brother Ron and Vicki who came from Lakeland and their friends, Mike and Juanita who drove up from Bonita Springs at Sharkey's for delicious lunch.     Good visit with them and celebrated Ron's birthday which is tomorrow!

Ron, Vicki, Juanita and Mike

Said our good-byes and we drove back to Naples.   Rode bikes and just soaked up the warm sunshine - it was a beauty for the last day of January!    Wow....this month sure flew by and we packed in a lot of fun with family and friends shopping, eating and taking in some fun sites! Tomorrow we are off to
 Fort Myers Beach.

Sunday, January 30

Another pretty day and we were off to Ave Maria, FL - new area about 35 miles northwest of Naples (in the middle of nowhere) that was the brainchild of Tom Monaghan (owner of Domino's Pizza and the Detroit Tigers).    With Tom's vision, Ave Maria University is now up and going (the 1st new Catholic university in over 40 years in the US).    Together with other developers, the area began in 2002 and the university which now has 600+ students opened in 2007.    Surrounding the church in the middle of the town square is a variety of shops, restaurants, and offices.   There are several vacant spots, so hopefully, new businesses will be coming in.   The new Publix opened recently and it's a beauty!   In the outlying areas are subdivisions along with a parochial school K-12.

Ave Maria Church, Ave Maria, Florida

We went to 10:00 Mass in the beautiful church - it was very impressive with many parts in Latin and almost completely full.    Quite a unique experience seeing this town/village sprouting up from nothing - would be interesting to return in another 5-10 years.

Back to Naples, stopped for ice cream and then to Daisy - off on our bikes and had planned to eat ribs at Michelbob's (just up the road), but they are closed on Sundays!    Darn....had sandwiches/salads and hunkered down with good books and our laptops.    Maybe ribs tomorrow night?

We are right across the road from the Naples airport - it is very busy with small and larger planes coming and going constantly!    Had the trains in Hollywood and now the planes here, but we've gotten used to them, so no biggie!

Yesterday I had picture of the tall, skinny evergreen on the blog.....our friend, Sandy from TN wrote that it's called a "monkey" tree which has sharp needle-like leaves and even a monkey can't climb them?   Actually, while biking today, we came across another one!    So...now you know the "rest of the story" - thanks Sandy!

Saturday, January 29

We were very sad this morning to hear that our niece, Jennifer's father-in-law passed away last night.    He was only 53 and had some serious health issues recently, but was doing much better.   He died of a blood clot in his heart.   We are soooo sorry, Miss Jenny and Jake.

The skies were that gorgeous deep cerulean blue and temps in the low 70's.....we rode our bikes downtown where lots of activity was happening on 5th Avenue.  The street was blocked off with families and others painting and showing off their artistic talents while live music played.  A fashion show from various shops was fun with all these itty bitty bodies in casual to ultra fancy attire entertained the throngs!

Some of the artists doing their thing

I browsed some of the shops and just enjoyed walking around while Mark sat in the sun and read.    We got back on our bikes and rode to 3rd Street (more good shopping) and had wonderful lunch at Tommy Bahamas.   We rode around the beautiful neighborhoods, down to the beach and back to Daisy
 (8.5 miles total).

Naples beach

Saw this interesting "tall" and "skinny" evergreen along our ride (check out that BLUE sky)

Tonight we did the webcam with Anne, Liam and Connor - fun!

Friday, January 28

Lots of clouds this morning and in the 50's....we took off for Everglades City ((35 miles south) and enjoyed driving around, stopping at the visitor's center and watching a movie.   So much about this area that we were not familiar with - this area is not swampy - water is always flowing with many alligators, crocodiles (becoming endangered), insects, birds, mammals (manitees, etc.)    There are many areas you can rent the airboats to get out and see it all.

The Rod and Gun Club is a historical landmark built in 1864 and visited by many of our former presidents and movie-star celebrities.   It is lovely and we had a delicious "Florida" lunch on the screened-in porch, starting with New England Clam Chowder and then Grouper Reuben (Mark) and Crab Cake Reuben (me) and topped off with key lime pie!    Went for a walk after that.

Beautiful Rod and Gun Club
The Barron River which flows in front of the restaurant/inn had this lavendar air boat pass by while we were eating with 2 pelicans perched on the bow.

Back to Naples and stopped at Wal Mart and Publix.    The sun came out while we were eating and rest of afternoon was gorgeous.   We exercised and then went on 6-mile bike ride!    Warming up a tad more each day!

Connor was the star student all week at school!
Way to go, Connor!!!

Thursday, January 27

Glorious blue sunny skies today - 65 degrees and breezy.   After breakfast we went to downtown Naples and I browsed 5th Avenue while Mark got a haircut and then sat in the sunshine reading his book.

I checked in with Dad as he wasn't feeling well last night and found out they were taking him to the hospital.   He's had this upper back pain (between the shoulders) for a few weeks and been on a pain patch which they change every 3 days.    After tests (pricking him with needles), he has a compressed fracture of the spine.   I've been reading all about this on Google - can take 8-12 weeks to heal and once you get these fractures, can occur more frequently.   He was at the ER about 4 hours and now back at the Lutheran Home with increased pain meds.    Once again, Judi (our advocate) was there after he returned from the hospital!

Mark and I had lunch on the water at The Docks - delicious!    Then ran a few more errands and back to Daisy.   Rode bikes for 4.5 miles and just a light supper tonight.

Wednesday, January 26

Cool and windy today....I got a manicure/pedicure while Mark ran some errands and got a few groceries.    Spent a nice indoor afternoon hunkered down with good books.   Exercised and then I walked around the park.

Sun came out late afternoon and we were off to meet friends, Walt and Mary Jo from back home at their condo.    We went to the Wyndemere Country Club and met friends, Don and Shirley (I'm in Exchange club with Don and Walt) and we had a wonderful dinner and great catching up!

Don, Shirley, Mary Jo and Walt

We wish these friends a fun, safe, healthy winter in Florida till we meet again in April back home!

Tuesday, January 25

Hello from Naples where we are settled at the Rock Creek RV Resort across from the airport!    Very windy today.   We had breakfast with Philip and Annette at Giorgio's on the water and said our
good-byes!    Sooo much fun with them these past 3 weeks!

Here we are in front of Gigorio's bakery (what a bunch of delectable delights in that case).

Mark, Daisy, Toad and I left Hollywood at 11 and had a good trip across Alligator Alley.    Windy here, too, but we ventured out for a bike ride around the airport (stayed here 2 years ago).  Starting to sprinkle and could have rain tonight and tomorrow.    Grass is really brown here compared to "green" Hollywood!

Will finish this up with quick update on the weather....it is now 9:15 and been pouring (weather radio has gone off twice).    Most of northern/central Florida and just north of us are getting heavy rain, hail, high winds and under a tornado warning.

Monday, January 24

Sunny, breezy warm day (84) - we went to the post office to mail some packages and back to Daisy to exercise, did 4 loads of laundry, long bike ride and good scrubbing of Daisy by Mark

Daisy's cleaning service
Annette came over and we went to "The King's Speech" - excellent movie!  And then to Publix for subs, chips and wine and carrot cake and back to Daisy.  We played 3-handed euchre.   Philip flew in,  Annette picked him up and we all played dominoes!

Gosh, 3 weeks ago today we arrived in Hollywood and where has the time gone?    What a great first part of our winter in Florida we've enjoyed with all the biking, walking, talking, games, eating, super weather and fun outings with Philip and Annette, Karen and Marvin (and visit from Bob, Linda, Ron, Vicki and Todd)!    Tomorrow we are off to Naples for one week!

Sunday, January 23

Spectacular day - sunny and in the upper 60's with no wind!    Mark and I went to 9:30 Mass at Little Flower, stopped at Starbucks, home to change clothes and then to Annette and Philip's for those awesome breakfast veggie sandwiches Annette makes.

Mark came back to Daisy; Annette and I took Philip to the airport and she and I went to Sawgrass shopping mall (largest shopping center in Florida) - it was mind boggling and soooo many people!   Annette got a few things...

Carlos and Annette

We went back to Annette's and Mark joined us for Mexican leftovers from last night, dominoes and then 3-handed euchre and  BLT's - yummy!   Great day!!!

Saturday, January 22

Dreary, cool Saturday here in South Florida.    Mark and I ran several errands, straightened up and cleaned a bit on Daisy and then went for a 5-mile bike ride thru the park.    Lots of parties going on at all the shelters with all the inflatables (for the kiddies to jump and have fun), balloons, food and all....

Visited my cousin Karen and Marvin at their condo - oohed and aahed over their 3 new flat screen TV's and enjoyed wine and fresh shrimp!    We all went to Cantina Laredo in Gulfstream Village and met Philip and Annette - wonderful Mexican dinners and margaritas!

It's all about presentation....this was my "Monterey" dish which was beautifully presented and delicious!
Marvin, Karen, Philip, Annette, Pat, Mark

Friday, January 21

Mark and I ran a bunch of errands this morning mainly up in north Fort Lauderdale (never been up in that area along the beach before).    Back to Daisy for lunch and then the heavens opened up around 1:30 with a heavy downpour.

We did our exercises and then spent the evening with Annette (Philip is fying off and on this weekend).    We played 3-handed euchre (fun....first time), enjoyed hearty corn chowder and bougatsa (Greek pastry)!   Rained more this evening!

Thursday, January 20

We drove to Wellington today (53 miles northwest) and had a delightful visit with our friend, Susie.    She is such fun, looks good and as always, such a treat to be with.  Lots of good laughs and then very good lunch at "Today, I'm Greek".   After lunch we drove around and saw the polo grounds which are a big attraction in Wellington.

Enjoying lunch at "Today, I'm Greek"
Pat and Susie

Back to Daisy, changed clothes and off to walk the beach with Philip and Annette.   Not too many people, warm and humid!
Hollywood Beach

Annette fixed delicious spaghetti pizza for supper!

Wednesday, January 19

Beautiful day!   Philip arrived at 10 and we 3 were off to Key Largo.   Stopped in Miami to pick up our friend, Glen who drove over from Fort Myers.   He and Mark enjoyed their dive and Mark couldn't have had a better "dive buddy" with all of Glen's experience and expertise!    And it was his birthday, so nice of him to share it with us!   Of course, diving on his birthday was a real treat!

Glen and Mark with their dive boat before going out

Philip was such a good sport taking his Mama here and there - we drove to Islamorada and had a delicious lunch outdoors at The Fish Company, followed by browsing a few shops!     It was oh-so-pretty to be out and about!

Two happy guys coming back into marina after their dives!

Got back to Daisy at 6:30 - another fun day in sunny Florida!

Tuesday, January 18

After all the rain, it's sunny, breezy and WARM (mid 80's)!   Mark went to an ATandT store to have his new phone looked at (does not want to turn off); they gave him a new one.     I wrapped Liam's birthday presents (can't believe that sweet boy will soon be 6)!!!

After lunch we rode bikes and I read.    Mark's parents called - they were so appreciative of all the cards they received from our family/friends, so thanks to all who remembered them on their 65th anniversary!

Ryan is leaving tomorrow on the USS Stennis for a month in the Pacific Ocean doing maneuvers

Tomorrow we are going to Key Largo - Mark and a friend will dive...Philip and I will sightsee, shop and just check it all out.

Monday, January 17

Rainy Monday and good day to just hunker down in Daisy....I cleaned out the fridge and Mark ran some errands.   Caught up on e-mails and other computer stuff.   Lots of rain all afternoon - took a short nap (very comfy hearing all those raindrops hit Daisy's roof).    We had planned to have a cook out with Philip and Annette here on Daisy, but with the wet weather, decided to go to The Peppermill which was a favorite from last year (went there 3x and twice on Catrina).    It was very good again.

Afterwards, the guys browsed around Best Buy and Annette and I walked thru Whole Foods (my 1st time).     Came back to their place - we girls played rummikube and the guys watched a movie.    Still raining!

Sunday, January 16

We "ate" our way thru this Sunday.....Annette inivted us for some marathon games starting with euchre.    Cassie (neighbor and friend) and I were partners against Mark and Annette.   They won 4 out of 7.      We snacked, munched, grazed, nibbled, etc. all afternoon.   Annette, Mark and I walked around the neighborhood after the euchre tournament.
Hannah (Cassie's daughter - 4th grade)

Philip flew in at 5 and while Annette picked him up at airport, Mark and I went to Publix for fried chicken.    After supper, we played tripoly and then dominoes (Philip won)!   FUN Sunday...

Saturday, January 15

HAPPY 65th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
to Mark's parents!    What a special day this is!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
And here's to many more happy, healthy years together!    Don't they look great?

Beautiful day in south Florida.    After breakfast, we did 2 loads of laundry and then walked to the beach with Annette (4 miles round-trip)    Lots of people out and about, including a wedding on the beach!

Here we are on Hollywood Beach

Back to Annette's, changed clothes and went to 4:00 Mass at Church of the Little Flower.   Home for dinner (crab-stuffed tilapia) and then dominoes and rummikube!   Fun....

Friday, January 14

High of 71 today and windy - mostly cloudy.    I got my closet organized and Daisy tidied up a bit in the morning and then after lunch and exercising, we went to Target and Publix.    Came home and rode bikes.   TY Park is closed today (employee furlough - without pay to help with their budget)?    Strange seeing NO one in the park except for we RVers'.    The shelters were empty, no one walking or biking, etc.....and more of the same coming on Monday (MLK holiday).

Annette invited us for Mahi Mahi dinner (delicious) and I did a load of laundry.   Mark watched a movie and we girls played Sequence (she whomped me)!!!

Our grandcats

Thursday, January 13

Mark and I went to West Palm Beach this morning.... had a nice lunch at City Place (City Cellar) and then while I shopped, got a manicure and read at Barnes and Noble, he was taking a diving lesson which he thoroughly enjoyed!

Back to Hollywood around 5:30 and Annette came over for 3 games of rummikube.    We played last night, too at her house!    Philip is flying till Sunday.

With all the cold and snow around the country, Florida is getting hit, too, but we laughed this morning when we saw folks in their boots, furry earmuffs, heavy coats, etc., and it was 62 degrees!!!   We'll be ready for the warm-up that's supposed to be coming soon!

Wednesday, January 12

Chilly, breezy day with no sun!    We all met for breakfast at "Grandpa"s - enjoyed the complimentary warm danish and cinnamon rolls followed by good breakfasts for all!
All of us at "Grandpa's"

Mark took Linda, Vicki and I to Gulfstream Village - Annette went to work - the guys went back to P and A's to hang out.

We girls had fun shopping especially at Crate and Barrel and The Container Store
Here's Pat hanging out with the Simpson Clan:
Homer, Marge, Maggie, Lisa and Bart

Thought our kids and grandsons would get a kick out of this!
Ron, Vicki, Bob, Linda and Todd left around 1:00.....sure enjoyed their visit!

We went to Philip and Annette's tonight for delicious hearty corn chowder (Brooke's recipe).    Good night for soup....we know we have no right to complain about the weather, BUT....
Our North Carolina grandsons have had 3 days off school cause of the snow, fog, etc.

Congratulations to our nephew, Rick and Michelle who welcomed a baby daugher, Maddie this morning!   Also, to Grandma Doris and Grandpa Rich.  This makes 95 in Mark's immediate family!!!

1-11-11

Woke up this Tuesday morning to very foggy conditions!!!   By 9:00 it had cleared up....we went to Philip and Annette's and Mark took Vicki, Linda and I to the train station.    We girls spent the day in West Palm Beach shopping, (lunch at BB Kings) and just enjoyed the pretty day.

Linda, Vicki and Pat in our new "matching" shirts/dress
Waiting for the train at West Palm to take us back to Hollywood

Meanwhile, the guys went to the Hard Rock Casino, rode the air boat (saw 3 gators) and had lunch at Flanigan's.

Annette picked we girls up at the train station and then we all met at Daisy for drinks and snacks.   The girls played euchre, Todd and Philip walked around the park (2x) and then we all had dinner at
Shenanigans.

Monday, January 10

Mostly cloudy today - we did our exercises and then went on 5-mile bike ride.   My brothers, sisters-in-law and nephew arrived from Lakeland.    We visited at Philip and Annette's and then went to Hollywood Beach.

Bob, Todd, Mark, Ron, Philip
Linda, Vicki, Pat

Back to P and A's for dominoes, drinks, snacks.  Ron, Bob and Mark watched a movie while the rest of us played dominoes with Annette, the DQ.

Sunday, January 9

Busy fun Sunday....met Philip and Annette at 11:00 Mass at Church of the Little Flower then to lunch at The Yardhouse at Gulf Stream Village.    What a neat place, great food and so awesome sitting in the sunshine  on January 9th.
The "Happy" Girls
The "Serious" Guys

Annette went on home to take care of some things for work; I shopped and the guys went to the horse races here at Gulf Stream - beautiful area of shops, restaurants, horse and dog racing, casino, etc.

Stopped at Publix and back to Daisy.    The kids came over later in afternoon, we walked around the park and then played dominoes outside followed by picnic supper pinching ourselves that - yes, it is  JANUARY!!!

Christmas trees can be dropped off at the park and there is a large pile which they put into a chipper machine and then scatter the chippings around the park.....as we are walking or biking, the aroma of all that evergreen is just fabulous....could get real high on that smell!    HA!

Saturday, January 8

Very breezy out today, but sunshine and 77....we went to Publix this morning  after doing our weight lifting exercises.   We have a nice big patio area with grill, picnic table, and plenty of space for our bikes, weight bench, chairs, etc.

Rode bikes around the park - love this place.  It's so big and lots of folk enjoying the pretty day walking, biking, strolling, roller blading around the lake.    There are many shelters and all full with family reunions, baby showers, birthday parties, etc. - lots of balloons, food and family fun.

My cousin, Karen, Marvin and Annette came this afternoon - good visiting and then Mark grilled chicken and beef  kabobs and with Annette's spinach salad....yummy dinner!    Karen and Marvin live 1/2 way between here and Miami.    Philip is in frigid Chicago tonight.......gets chilly here in late afternoon/evening, but we're talking in the 50's???

Karen and Marvin

Friday, January 7

Clear blue sunny skies today, but only in the 60's (you folks back home would give anything for these temps, I'm sure)!!!   We did laundry, rode our bikes and then Annette brought delicious salads from Panera.   Sat on the picnic table in the sunshine!

Annette and I left to get massages (1 hour of pure heaven)!   Mark rode his bike (13 miles) - got a hair cut, went to post office and just enjoyed the ride!

Annette and I walked around the park; Philip came and then he and Annette went to nearby deli for some goodies for supper.  We played a quick 4 rounds of dominoes (Philip has to be up early tomorrow for flight).  Annette was the DQ (Domino Queen).

I finished reading "Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet" tonight - loved it!!!!!   Thanks again, Sharon for the great recommendation!

Thursday, January 6

Sunny start to the day and we both did our exercises and then rode our bikes.   2x today, our weather radio went off with storms in the area, but only a short time ago (7:30) did we get some rain.

After lunch, Mark took me to Home Goods and Barnes & Noble while he went to dive shop and got some equipment from gift cards Phiip and Annette gave him!   Like a little boy in a toy store!!!   Ha.....hoping the 4 of us can go to the Keys sometime and he can do a dive.

Our sweet Connor had some serious dental work done today at the hospital.   He was there all day with Mommy and Daddy, but home tonight and resting.

Connor before surgery
Leaving hospital with his pillow pet (Ruffie) in a little red wagon!

Mark and I went to Shenanigan's Sports Bar for supper - really good Cuban sandwich and burger!

Wednesday, January 5

Philip picked us up at 9:45 and we were out and about all day - what a perfect Florida day with 83 sunny , breezy degrees!   We met Annette at Macaroni Grill for late DELICIOUS lunch.   Stopped at Target (they have thee biggest Targets down here - huge  with complete grocery section, etc) and then back to Daisy.

We all went for a walk around the park and then sat outside enjoying the lovely evening and our greyhounds  (drinks).   Had brought back 2 orders of tiramasu from lunch, so shared one of those - sooo yummy!

Dad came back to the nursing home this afternoon and settled in his new, bigger room!

Back to exercising tomorrow and biking - holiday eating is hanging on the bods and now...... all this good Florida cuisine!   Yikes....

Tuesday, January 4

Settling in here at Topeekeegee Yugnee (TY) State Park where we spent a month 2 years ago.  Mark and I went to Target and so happy to be back in the land of Publix!  We moved to our new spot late this morning and organized closets, drawers, etc. taking wintry clothes out to Toad and unpacking the capris, shorts, sandals, flip flops, etc.    I went for a bike ride (they have a great 2-mile walking/biking trail thru the park).   Mark washed Daisy and we did our exercises.    We bought a collapsible bench for working out so that works good on our patio in the warm sunshine.

Philip came over at 4:00 and we 3 walked the trail and then had an early supper outdoors before it got dark.   Annette was at a visitation.

This is a very busy RV park with 80% of the folks from Quebec.

My Dad is going back to the Lutheran Home tomorrow - he's a trooper!!!

Nite Nite

Monday, January 3

We left Waldo this morning at 8 with nice sunshine and a really good day for traveling after all the rain!

I talked to Dad's doctor along the way.   He does not have pneumonia and they are running some additional tests.  He feels it's the combination of congestive heart failure and COPD.  Judi came to see him again today and I had a good chat with him, but Dad sounded really tired (hasn't been sleeping very good).   Hospitals are not the best place for a good night's rest!

Uneventful trip to Hollywood arriving at 2:15.    We had not expected to be here till tomorrow, but they had a spot for us at Topeekeegee Yugnee State Park tonight and tomorrow we'll have to move to where we'll be for the next 3 weeks.

Mark and I ran a few quick errands and then picked up Thai food from Sake and Philip and Annette joined us - it was delicious!    Opened Christmas gifts and had a nice evening of visiting.

A little bit more of Christmas 2010
Annette and Philip

It was 81 when we got here today.....yeah!

Sunday, January 2

Rain, rain, so much rain all day long!    Where in the world is Waldo?   Well.....Daisy and we found this little berg here in Florida (800+ people) and tonight we are settled at the Rolling Villas RV Park.  Despite the weather, was a nice drive thru rural country and little towns avoiding the interstates.

We left Wrens for Swainsboro and 11:00 Mass at Holy Trinity.   Quaint little church (11 pews) with very friendly folks.    Father John Brown asked we visitors to introduce ourselves (one other couple from Marietta, GA).    Father has been to our Newman Center when he took a youth group to Minnesota and stopped there and had a really warm welcome and overnight stay.   Since it is the feast of the Epiphany, 3 kings came in church at end of Mass dressed in their fancy garb (boys, 8-10 years old) and carried 3 different kinds of  treats for all to enjoy and take home.

Along the way, we passed many dairy farms (holstein), pecan farms, cotton fields and Baptist churches.

Anne went to visit Dad today (Judi had been there just before Anne arrived).   He's going  thru lots of tests and hoping his doctor will come in tonight.   He said he's eating too good - Dad has always been a "good" eater.    Maybe I'll be able to talk to the doctor tomorrow.

Found an Arby's today that had chicken salad - delish, but many Arby's no longer carry this sandwich. It has pecans and grapes and is sooo yummy!

While we had all this rain in Georgia and north Florida, Philip and Annette were walking the beach in south Florida with 75 sunny degrees!   Hoping for some sunshine tomorrow!

Happy 2011

Happy New Year!   We did welcome in the new year (3 boys, Grandpa and I) at the stroke of midnight and watched all the festivities at Times Square.    Slept in today
Drew, Brady and Davis watching TV on Daisy this New Year's morning.

And then I heard that my Dad is in the hospital....waiting for more news, but could be heart related?
One more picture with sweet Brady and his Dora babies

Very foggy this morning - we left at noon and had the fog for about 20 miles and then cleared up.   I finished "A Land Remembered" this afternoon - cried and cried.....it was wonderful and I highly recommend it!   Author is Patrick Smith (gee, Ryan grew up with and went to school with a Pat Smith, but don't imagine it's the same?)   Mark enjoyed it as much as me!

Tonight we're settled at Wrens, Georgia with rain.   High temp today was 70 as we were traveling.  Felt so so good!   My cousin, Sublettian friend and nurse, Judi, is our advocate for Dad while Ron, Bob and I are away.   Bless her for checking on Dad today and getting back with a full report.   We should know more tomorrow when his doctor returns from vacation.   I did talk to Dad - he sounded pretty good, just tired and was eating dunner.  He had a rough night and long day at the hospital in ER waiting to be admitted.
