Thursday - June 1

We had a nice cruise today leaving Deltaville at 9 and arriving on Smith Island around 11:15 (34 miles).     Smith Island is in Maryland on the MD/VA border and was once a very big crabbing community only accessible by boat (ferry runs from Crisfield, MD) but never saw one today.   We are actually in the town of Ewell, MD.

There are only about 80 full-time residents who get about in their golf carts or bikes.     Few cars on the island, but there's a Methodist church which is getting a fresh coat of paint, post office, 2 restaurants, a school, volunteer fire department, 2 B and B's and a newer building that houses the visitor's center and gift shop closed today and grocery store permanently closed.

While some homes are neat and tidy, the majority are in very sad disrepair and the yards, no better.

We had lunch at the Bayside Restaurant next to the marina.....best crab cake sandwich ever.   Only 2 other groups eating there including the 3 painters from the church.

Another claim to fame for this place is the 10-layer Smith Island cake.    These are made locally and sold all over the country?     At least, back in the day they were, now most of the baking for long-distance delivery is done in Salisbury, MD.    In 2008, the governor of Maryland made the 10-layer Smith Island cake the state's official dessert.

Traditional yellow cake with chocolate icing between layers.
Cakes and icing come in various flavors.
DEEElish!

GREAT crab and cake

We rode bikes and after quickly seeing the town on 1-lane roads, we meandered out in the country on the Marsh Trail.    This would've led us to little town of Rhodes Point,  but our legs were hurting (long time since' we've ridden the bikes), so....turned around!    Maybe tomorrow as we plan to stay till Saturday.

7 years ago today.....our sweet Connor (3) and Liam (4)

And exactly 7 years later here are the brothers at 11 and 12 serving Mass together
for the first time this morning at Holy Trinity!

Late this afternoon Mark rode his bike and I walked......I passed by 2 boys playing in their front yard and stopped to chat with them.    Here's their story....they are still in school for 10 more days (2nd and 6th grades).     Their school has EIGHT students and covers Pre-school-8th.    The 8 students are in grades 1-4, 6 and 7th.    There are 2 teachers but one is not certified to teach but helps out.    They love living here on the island....cute little guys!

We sat on Catrina's bridge with our drinks and soaked up this quiet, peaceful setting on this very unique little island.

WOW.....night time setting in on sleepy little Smith Island
