August 2

Woke up to a glorious blue-sky morning in Valdez. Mark walked to the Sugar 'n Spice shop where they were showing the movie on building the Alaska pipeline. Afterwards, we walked to St. Francis Xavier for 10:00 Mass.Monument in park near the Maxine & Jesse Whitney Museum (one of the largest collections of Native American artifacts in the world)The drive from Valdez to Tok today was very pretty and enjoyed many of these picturesque lakes (float plane off in the distance)
We are at the Tok RV Village tonight and exactly one month ago today (7/2/09), we were here and ate at Fast Eddy's which we did again - great pizza and same waitress! This fireweed is almost finished blooming - it has become my favorite wildflower here in Alaska as it is so abundant and pretty along the roadside. However, when the blossoms reach the top of the stalk, winter is not far away!!!

We had entertainment in the park tonight and enjoyed Dave Stancliff, a native Alaskan who along with 3 others played banjo, fiddle and guitar. He was quite entertaining with songs of the Last Frontier and tales of Alaska.

The evening ended on a bittersweet note as the last song he sang was "North to Alaska" which has become "our song" while up here and part of the blog. We have 90 miles to travel in Alaska tomorrow and then we'll be in Canada and the long trek home thru 5 provinces and 4 states.

Pat: Maybe on the way home you can finish the Road to the Sun in Glacier National Park. Remember if you do this, there is a great leisurely hike to The Hidden Lake in the Park. If I remember the trail starts at the top of the road where there is a visitor's center. Charlie and Marty (Ralph and Vernette's friends) recommended it to us. They had done it one year when visiting Glacier. We could not get there because there was too much snow. I think Charlie and Marty did the hike in August. They said it was a nice easy hike and the lake was very picturesque. Judy

Pat: Just checked out Glacier National Park and it was at the Logan Pass Visitor Center that you can hike to the Hidden Lake. We stayed close to the Apgar Visitor Center right next to Lake McDonald which is beautiful. We stayed in the National Park cabins (oldest in the national park system). Can't remember where you stayed when you were there earlier in the summer. Judy
