Thursday - August 12

At 7 AM, the skies were a very scary dark blue and we thought "oh boy, here we go again!"    But other than some drizzle and then short bursts of heavier rain, it fizzled out!    We took the umbrella and left at 8:30 for "A Taste by the Lake" coffee shop/bakery.    It's a very small place with no inside seating and of course, outside everything was wet, so we took our pastries (glazed donut for Mark and maple/bacon/cream-filled long John for me) and coffees to the place next door which is a pizza/bar not open till much later.    They had nice under cover seating and glad we were high and dry as it poured while we were there.

Nothing like a maple/bacon long john

As we were sitting there enjoying breakfast, I got a text from Ryan (northern England) with an attached obituary for Joe Schwartz.   I started crying as I read his very long, wonderful obituary.    Joe and Liddy lived in Arlington, VA and their son, Joe was the Blue Angels team doctor for Ryan's last 2 years.    Absolutely super people and we were with them at many air shows.    Joe was such a kind, gentle man who always gave me a big hug whenever we saw them for each show (usually in the hotel lobby).   He was full of love for his family (only 1 son and  Dr. Joe and Susan gave Joe 3 grandsons, Joey 8, Declan 6 and Wyatt 4) who were his pride and joy!  Joe and Liddy invited us to their home when we were visiting Ryan on his boat in DC.    Very special people.    Joe was 82.

Joe's funeral Mass will be tomorrow at Notre Dame (Joe is an alumni) and burial also at ND.
   Rest in Peace, Joe

I came on back to Catrina to grab another umbrella although the rain was to hold off for several hours.    Mark got the golf car rented ($15/hr) and we were off.    Kelley's is only 1 mile wide by 2 miles long and such a pleasant ride along the lake admiring the lovely homes (big and small) and then thru the woods.    We stopped to walk around the glacier grooves which are a big part of Kelley's and formed over 70,000 years ago.    Put pics of these from 13 years ago, but here they are again....

And these padlocks with names and date (all 2021) that people apparently leave as a reminder they were here.    Same thing at the Seven-Mile Bridge in Marathon, FL.

After all the rain and wind yesterday, the sunshine was a treat, although it warmed up very quickly.    Sad to see many downed trees and/or big branches.   The paved and gravel roads were littered with twigs, limbs and standing water here and there.    Here are some of the sites around KI...

My chauffeur and carriage - GREAT way to see the island
Welcome to this very special place
This private home gets the prize for most beautiful flowers
This lovely place has 12 bedrooms - maybe was once an Inn?    Now a private home
This Christian facility on the island complete with many cabins, a chapel, pool, etc. all overlooking the lake - sailing, kayaking, etc.   It's a camp, retreat and conference center for children, adults and married couples
Awe....if it hadn't been for 4-H, Mark and I would never have met and wouldn't be enjoying this adventuresome lifestyle!    4-H will always have a special place in our hearts!
And this is the end of a very short runway which we were able to drive over!
The school on Kelley's - with only a year-round population of 236, I wonder how many students are here?
Some neat signs

We had the golf cart for almost 2 hours and thoroughly enjoyed it.    Turned it in, shopped a bit (Mark got some t-shirts) and then back to Catrina for lunch (last night's leftovers - walleye, onion rings and spinach salad)!!!

After working on the blog and sorting thru pics, we walked to the post office to mail a card.    Met a nice couple and their college-age daughter from Dayton who are on the Island for the 1st time.    They asked us to take their picture.   I commented on the lady's cute t-shirt.......Mama 1997; Grandma 2021.    They have 3 boys and 1 girl and their oldest is having a baby in December.

Ginormous home
Nice 'n cozy
Another welcome sign
Pretty blooms here at the marina
Gorgeous hibiscus here in northern Ohio

Last night when we were at the Village Pump, we read where this place is home to the World's Best Brandy Alexanders.    So, that was next on the agenda on this hot and windy Thursday.    It was excellent and just perfect for what feels like 97.

Excellent Brandy Alexander
Great place for food and drink
Next door to the Village Pump is another restaurant "Peepers" and this is sign on their door
Sign of the times

We went for a walk after supper thru "The Quarry" a condo subdivision and then along the lake.  we sat on a bench and"people" watched.   Back home to play some 2-handed euchre which I won both games (surprise)!!!

Tomorrow we plan to cruise over to Middle Bass Island just 8 miles away.   Scattered thunderstorms are in the forecast all day long.
