Around 3:15 AM, the wind really blew with thunder, lightning and heavy rain; but, it didn't last long and so back to sleep!!! Rain was threatening this morning so off to Coffee Express for breakfast. We decided to bring it back home but just before the coffees were ready, the heavens opened up and oh my....it was so windy and the pouring rain was coming at an angle. UGLY......Mark ran and got the car closer and of course, we got wet but didn't melt getting back to Catrina. Enjoyed our goodies (lemon/blueberry muffin for me and egg/ham/cheese sandwich for Mark) and waited for the rain to stop.
Around 11ish, the rain did stop, so we stowed our stuff, undid the power and electrical plus the lines and fenders and made the 11:30 bridge out of Port Clinton. Yesterday we thought we were going west and just getting into Michigan. But with the unsettled weather and winds to pick up as the day went on, my Captain had the great idea to just head across to Kelley's Island (15 miles northeast) for a few days. So glad to be here and with the help of a dockhand and another boater as the winds were very strong here in the marina (Portside), we did it! We are moving around a bit, but just glad to be off the lake.
Went for a walk downtown - last here in July, 2008 and actually on Connor's 2nd birthday - oh my, check out this little cutie
July 14, 2008
Since we had a fairly big breakfast, we passed on lunch and hit Dapper Dan's ice cream (Toft's). We walked around and remembered how neat and quaint this place is. We will check it out more tomorrow when we rent a golf cart and really see the island.
Back to Catrina for a bit and then I wandered around the shops. Read for awhile and then wanted to go back and see what was all here. A few clothing/gift stores, general store, coffee shop (tomorrow), and the Island Market. Mark texted that I had better come back to the boat as weather was looking BAD.....sure was. But checked back with him and said "why don't you come here at the marina and we can hunker in the bathrooms/showers (individual and VERY nice and cool) with concrete walls. So, that's what he did and we were nice 'n cozy but oh my, whenever he would peek out the door (which almost got away from him), the visibility was zero and rain and wind were crazy......
We were in there about 25 minutes and then when the rain let up, came back to Catrina only to find our bimini (bridge cover) had torn and was flapping like crazy. We took the frame down and secured the canvas - a winter project coming up for the canvas people. This is 17 years old and original to Catrina.
One of the cushions also had the strap pulled out of seam.....wow!!!
Ryan continues to be on the move....now's he in the Netherlands.
The rain let up a bit around 6:00 so we walked to Village Pump (#1 on Trip Advisor) and had a most wonderful meal of perch, walleye, onion rings and spinach salad - everything was excellent and Mark ended the meal with lava cake and ice cream! Waddled out the door, went for a short walk and on home.
So many goodies on this spinach salad topped off with 6 slices of bacon and hot bacon dressing
Charming home near the marina
Sunset on Kelley's Island after the storms
