July 3

Beautiful day for traveling along the Alcan Highway (which ended at Delta Junction) and then drove the Richardson Highway to Fairbanks! Stopped at some areas along the way... At Delta Junction....Mark stands by marker signifying the end of the Alcan Highway
Also at Delta Junction, this large metal sculpture of a giant mosquito was neat (as long as it was metal as they are in abundance up here and BIG)!
Rika's Roadhouse and Landing was a stop for the miners and truckers to spend the night for $1 per night and they could eat for an additional $1. It is now a state historical park and this picture is of the museum/gift shop. There's also a restaurant, blacksmith shop, telegraph station, etc.
Delta region along Richardson Highway (moose was off in the distance - my first to spot and 3rd for Mark)
Quick drive thru North Pole where everything is Christmassy, including the candy cane light poles up and down the streets!
Mailed some letters from here!
We are settled at the River's Edge RV Park in Fairbanks for 2 days. We've been living in jeans, jackets, sox, etc., almost our entire vacation, so a real treat to bring out the shorts, t-shirts, sandals yesterday! I put on a pair of flip flops and off to get a pedicure! This is where I first heard the news that Sarah Palin is stepping down as governor - much to the dismay of the locals, although wishing her well with her future endeavors?
After quick stop at Fred Meyer, we had a wonderful dinner outside at Chena's (on the Chena River) and then ran into John and Heather, our friends from TN who are in the same campground. Had a good catch-up visit with them since we were together in Shelby, Montana a few weeks ago!

Pat: We took a paddle boat ride on the Chena River (if I remember correctly) The river was just outside Fairbanks. We got to see Susan Butcher (lady who won the Iditarod several times)at her compound where she and husband trained dog sled dogs. We also got to see salmon being filleted and cured. This is also where we saw the two rivers meet. One side was like any river and the other was YUCKY!!!!!!!!!! It was the Yukon River that was so very very YUCKY. Later on we took a boat to Dawson City in the Yukon Territory and it continued to be YUCKY the whole way. Something about it being glacier fed and the silt coming into the river. Judy
