Wednesday – up early to catch the 8:55 ferry (20
minute ride to ferry and then check in at least 1 hour before at Anacortes to Friday
Harbor on San Juan Island.) We drove Big Red aboard and just amazed how many vehicles (semi trucks, RV’s, campers,
trucks carrying most anything and everything and then regular cars) – the ferry
we were on could carry a maximum of 140 vehicles + over 2000 passengers. Many are walk-ons, too. We were not to leave our vehicles (except
for the bathroom) and must wear masks.
Pretty ride on the Straits of Juan de Fuca. One hour and 10 minutes later, we arrived in
Friday Harbor – oh what a neat little town.
It was chilly and our hoodies felt good. Found a parking spot and then Crow’s Nest
for coffees. The barista directed us
to the Demeter Bakery Café which had thee best cinnamon buns which we shared
along with a morning glory muffin. Both
the coffee shop and bakery were carry out only. Everyone was wearing masks.
And then we walked around – not many people out and about
and some shops have a 4-person max in store at any one time. Mark got a long-sleeved T-shirt and I got a
new navy/red hoodie. It was chilly – barely
got to 60.
We took off in Big Red and drove to the San Juan Historic Site (English Camp) not realizing there were 2 historic sites and also saw the American Camp. Drove past a lavender farm and beautiful countryside. The little upscale village of Roche Harbor was so charming with lavish homes, boats, boats, so many boats. We braved the elements and had a very nice lunch outdoors overlooking the harbor at the Madrona Bar and Grill.
Drove back to Friday Harbor, parked and walked
around – had wanted an earlier ferry but all were filled so went with our
original 7:30 departure. Sat outdoors at Downriggers watching all the
charter boats (fishing, whale watching, etc) and the ferry coming in. We had drinks and excellent clam chowder.
Unfortunately, our ferry was running late and we didn’t
leave Friday Harbor till after 9 getting us back to Flo shortly after 11. LONG day, but fun! Big Red was right up front on the ferry so
we could really see “up close and personal” – a bit unnerving for me. But then, it got dark, so…..
Thursday – It was a short night as we were up by 6:30 to go on another ferry ride – this time from Coupeville (another town on Whidbey Island) to Port Townsend. It rained during the night and continued all morning. It was in the 50’s all day and still had drizzle off and on till early afternoon. We drove to Port Angeles and had breakfast in Flo from the Blackbird Coffeehouse – delicious panini ham/egg/cheese sandwiches and coffees. Then off to Olympic National Park and walked 2 miles (round trip) to Marymere Falls. It was a mushy walk thru thee most beautiful forest – like a magical land and then the falls….WOW!!!!
Friday – Sunshine and 76 today – what a treat! Mark drove to the little deli nearby for some more delicious smoked salmon only to find they don’t open till 11 today……arghhhh!!!!!! Hope we’ll find some again somewhere. Back on the road leaving Whidbey Island around 10ish – sure enjoyed our time here. Beautiful country!!!
Mark did an awesome job getting us thru Seattle and Tacoma traffic. We so enjoyed our time in Seattle in 2016 (Blue Angels, Allie and Owen, etc.) Would love to come back someday, but not meant to be on this trip with all that’s going on……really want to tour Boeing, too, but don’t imagine they're giving tours these days. Stopped in Olympia for quick lunch and arrived at the Brookhollow RV Park is Kelso, WA at 3 This is a very pretty place and all 133 sites are full. Planning to stay 4 nights. We are 40 miles from Portland, OR Today was all interstate driving on I-5 and could see Puget Sound at tines.
BLT's for supper and then bike ride around the park on a nice bike/walking path around a dyke high above Flo and the park.
