Thursday - September 30

Cannot believe it's the last day of September!    Crazy how time is flying by here in 2021 - I say that every year, but I'm thinking this year has passed us by especially fast!    Just my thoughts!  😊

We took off from KK at 9 with Joyce and Butch for Caleri's Bakery Cafe in Eureka to have our coffees and breakfast.    All good stuff in neat old building - the owners really did a good job with this place!

Then off to Scottwood (one of my favorite shops) and sooo pretty for fall and just starting the Christmas decorating.    Stopped at Braker's Market (recommended by cousin Jane) and what a fabulous place of so many goodies.   It's just a year old but so close to us and will definitely be back.    We all did some shopping and on back to KK to rest a bit before we take off again!

Joyce browsing at Scottwood
The guys are chillin' at Scottwood while we gals shop
Wonderful Amish shopping at Braker's Market!    Look for the red truck on the roof!

At 2:00, we were off to town - had Bubble Tea at Energy Hut (1st time for Joyce, Butch and Mark) - they liked it!!!    Drove past our old house on Jackson street, dropped some things off at Anne's, and the boys were just getting home, so got to hug them and see the doggies, stopped at Schnucks for a few things, Mark mailed a pkg at UPS and on back to KK.

Cheers for Bubble Tea

Happy hour, another nice fire by Butch and so much reminiscing from our time in Okeechobee, friends we met, happy hours under the tiki, etc. etc.   We roasted hot dogs with yummy sides and enjoyed an awesome picnic!

The sky was brilliant with many stars and we ended the evening with s'mores and so many stories (Joyce and I were laughing about the home perms we used to get  - "Lilt" or "Toni" and on and on it went!)

Till tomorrow.....and bye bye to September and our fun friends!

Wednesday - September 29

A real hot one today!    I slept in (9:15 but 7:15 AZ time).    Unpacked, caught up with Mark and then welcomed our friends, Butch and Joyce from Champaign who arrived at 11:30 with their 5th wheel for 2 nights.     We met them in Okeechobee at Water's Edge back in 2018 and and have gotten together off and on for some fun outings.   So nice to be camping together again and have them "experience KK"!

We visited in their 1-year old 5th wheel (beautiful) and enjoyed some yummy coffee/lattes made on their nice fancy machine.  We walked around the park and later they came to our patio for drinks and snacks.    And then we were off to Busy Corner for supper (1st time this year for me).   Came back happy, stuffed campers    Butch built a fire and we gathered 'round for more yakkin, wine, etc.     Nine years ago Butch had a heart transplant in Madison, WI.....he's doing so well and he and Joyce are such a fun couple to be with!

Joyce and Butch
Butch's awesome fire and so pleasant sitting outdoors on this beautiful evening

So proud of Connor and the CCHS golf team on their 1st place finish today in the state golf regionals.   Connor is 2nd from left and shot a 79.    Now onto sectionals!
Way to go guys and best of luck Monday!

Update on Mark's bed cover which was ordered 35 days ago and remains a mystery?    FedEx says they cannot transfer the shipping address without the seller requesting it.    So...........the latest is that the company in Springfield, MO is "hopefully" rerouting it from Perrysburg, OH (finally found) to Carlock, IL BEFORE October 13th as we are leaving here on the 14th.    They are as frustrated as we are....but we'll hope it makes it.    What a mess!     The FedEx lady in Perrysburg told Mark "it's a very large package"....yeah, so how did it get misplaced???

Tuesday - September 28

Just got back to KK at 11:35 PM (what a big day).    For me, it's only 9:35, but still a LONG day!  Here's how it all started...

The warm AZ sun is shining and we finished our packing, ate breakfast on the patio and then the mighty roar of the jets from Luke Air Force Base.    We've heard them frequently since being in Surprise.     Never tire of this sound!

3 years ago today, Missy's husband Butch passed away after suffering a stroke 20 days earlier.....so many memories for Missy.... and Mark and I remember being with Butch on a few visits years ago.  We even stored Daisy in their side yard for a several weeks in 2006 when we went back to IL for the holidays.  Yesterday we talked about Kay's husband Bruce who passed away 1 year and 1 week before Butch.    Mark and Bruce worked together at State Farm.    So happy that Kay now has Jim in her life!

Missy and I left for the airport around 10:30 - sad that we're parting ways but a promise it won't be so long till we meet again!    What a fun few days with this dear friend and so fortunate to stay in such a lovely VRBO (our Fort Myers friends, John and Beth's home).

"Our" pool
Deep blue skies
Mountains and cacti

So, on 1st flight from Phoenix to Dallas, we were told there was a strong headwind and we would be coming in about 30 minutes late.    I had a long walk between terminals but it felt good after sitting 3 hours.    When I finally got to the gate, they were boarding in 12 minutes while storms were brewing with a threatening sky.     We pulled away from the gate and sat and sat.....finally, the pilot said  because of the storm cells (we were between 2), there was a major back-up of planes (as in 30 ahead of us)!    So we sat as the rain came down.    We started moving a little and a short time later, the pilot announced there were now "50" planes before us?    WHAT????   Apparently with the weather and these cell systems, planes were coming from several runways and really backed up - wondering if the larger planes have priority over the smaller ones which fly into Bloomington.?   We finally took off 1 hour and 20 minutes later with a full flight.    Shortly after we were airborne, a screeching noise sounded like it was coming overhead near us.   We had that blasted noise for almost the entire trip - ANNOYING to say the least.    The flight attendant said it was the air conditioning???   But then we landed, Mark was waiting with a Jimmy Johns sandwich and drink (I didn't have time to get any food in Dallas).    Such a good guy!

So, it's good to be home....and so glad I was able to do this trip (ticket left from spring 2020 when I was supposed to fly from Fort Myers to Bloomington to have eye measurements before cataract surgery).  Of course, that all fell thru and I had till the end of this year to use that ticket.    Mark had the brilliant idea of me flying to Phoenix to see Missy and that's how all this came about!

Bye bye sweet Missy and thanks for some great memories!

Monday - September 27

Another fun and final day for me in AZ.....it's been a whirlwind trip, but also relaxing - the time just went waaaay too fast!

We left around 9:45 this morning for Glendale to meet my Sublettian friend, Kay and her hubby Jim.    They live in Chandler so Glendale was kind of 1/2 way for each of us.    Missy and Kay met 7 years ago when I visited here.    Kay chose "Kiss the Cook" (breakfast or lunch) and it was a winner.    We had to wait at least 20 minutes for a table but we all enjoyed our meals (breakfast for Missy and Jim and lunch for Kay and me).    The place closes at 2:30 and by golly, we closed the place down and last car to leave the parking lot.     Whoaaa...so much to talk about and really enjoyed visiting with Jim.    It was a delightful afternoon.

Mark would've loved visiting with Jim and share their love of boating and adventures!   Hopefully Jim and Kay will come to FL this winter as Jim's son lives in Plant City which is near my brothers.    Definitely have to get together before another 7 years go by.

Missy and I drove back to Surprise and finally had time to dip our toes in the pool.    Backyard is lovely and very private....beautiful landscaping with pool, hammock and comfy furniture.

Meanwhile back in Bloomington.............Ryan flew in with FedEx and he, Anne and Mark had dinner at Maggie Miley's Irish Pub.

Sorry I missed out on this get together; but of course, really enjoying my time here with Missy.   Can't wait to have all my kiddos together the weekend of October 7-10 in Iowa City.....GO Hawkeyes!!!

Tomorrow....back to Kamp Komfort (Phoenix to Dallas to Bloomington)!

Sunday - September 26

A great night's sleep for Missy and me....we were up at 6 AM and started the chatter in the kitchen.

We shared stories of growing up, our families, and much more with laughs, tears and memories.   And then off to 9:00 Mass at St. Clare of Assisi - surprised that this very large, modern church had very few kneelers?    Mostly no masks were worn.    Had delicious breakfast at Nick's Diner (#1 for breakfast in Surprise).    On home in the rain which continued thru most of the day and only 73.    Crazy after all the 100+ weather they've been having, but no complaints!

A nice quiet afternoon watching TV, reading, visiting, etc.    John and Beth have such a lovely VRBO and Missy and I are thrilled to be staying here.    Beth has such a knack for decorating (as seen in 2 homes in Fort Myers) and John has put his talent and remodel knowledge into this home heart and soul!

We sure appreciated the bag of treats they leave on the table for their guests!

Thoughtful gift!

Later this afternoon, Missy and I did facetime with Jane (my Sublettian friend and cousin) and classmate of ours from Midstate College of Commerce, Peoria, IL when we started back in 1966.    What a wonderful friendship we've had thru all these years.

Last night these young men went to Homecoming at CCHS with friends.

Mark and Anne watched their golf match yesterday.    Have a good week!

Saturday - September 25

The alarm went off at 3:30 AM and we were up, dressed and out the door by 4:01......Mark took me to CIRA (Central Illinois Regional Airport), kissed bye bye, he waited till I got thru security, and then I was on my way - 1st to O'Hare with a 3-hour layover (always fun to "people watch", read, get my coffee fix, etc.)     And then to Phoenix with my long-time friend (since 1967) Missy waiting for me.    Both flights were nice 'n smooth and Chicago to Phoenix was 22 minutes early.

Wow.....sooo good to see her and we were off to the VRBO our friends from Fort Myers own - John and Beth.    The house is lovely in Surprise, AZ and has everything above and beyond what we could possibly need.

We settled in, chatted a bit and we were hungry so had a late lunch at Amigos - great Mexican fare and margaritas with plenty of leftovers.

Pat and Missy together again - been 7 years.

We are both sooo tired.   Missy drove from her home in Lake Havasu City this morning, so an early night for both of us.  Till tomorrow...good night from Surprise!

Friday - September 24

Busy day starting off with each of us driving to town separately - Mark had a big list of errands + got his flu shot.    I had a mani-pedi and then did 4 loads of laundry with Mark joining me at the laundromat in time to fold the socks and help carry out the clean clothes.

I finished packing this afternoon, took a nap and just a nice quiet day on Flo.    Very windy today and warmer.    After a long time of 100+ temps in AZ, it is cooling down just a bit and next few days will include some 80 degree temps - that will be a treat for those folks.

Tomorrow I'm off on a 6:00 AM flight to Chicago and then Phoenix to visit my friend Missy.    I'll be back Tuesday night,   Mark will hold down Flo and hopefully enjoy some R & R.

Enjoy your weekend!

Thursday - September 23

Mark and I were leaving our hotel room at 7:30 AM, loading up the car and leaving Branson in the fog.    But that didn't last long and rest of the way was sunny and bright.    We shared the driving (he listening to his country tunes and me and my oldies).    The #1 song from the 60's (by popular demand from listeners is "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers which is Mark's and my song!!!!)     Awe.....

We had a nice break 1/2 way into the trip meeting Mark's brother, Jim and Lydia for lunch in Kirkwood.    They've often mentioned Kaldi's Coffee as a favorite and that's where we met - excellent food/coffee with Mark having lunch and rest of us, enjoying breakfast + coffees for all.    We sat in the wonderful warm sunshine (they have a very large patio for outdoor seating and so fun to catch up.)    But much too soon, it was time to say good bye as we were on a mission to get back to KK, unpack, repack (me) and off to Anne's for dinner.

Jim, Lydia, Pat and Mark (the guys love their Tilley's)

Anne fixed delicious meatloaf, baked potatoes, corn, rolls and apple/cherry pie a la mode!    WOW....all tasted so good - can't beat comfort food especially when there's a little nip in the air.
Anne and Grandma are dwarfed by these growing boys!

We are tired nomads tonight but it was a good day and always nice to be "home".    Nighty night!

Wednesday - September 22

A beautiful morning on this crisp first day of Fall....sunshine and 40ish, but warmed up to 73!

I had worked on the blog off and on yesterday but had several paragraphs down below to insert later....well, at midnight, they were long forgotten so hoping all is back in order after I updated this morning!    Good night's sleep and we are ready to take on our last day in Branson.    Mark was up earlier and picked up some Zyrtec (staying ahead of a possible cold)?    He brought coffees back from Ground Up and later we walked uptown to The Branson Cafe for breakfast.    Good home cookin'.

And then we were off on this spectacular day.    The walkway along Taneycomo Lake was so pleasant.    I checked out a few shops, we had ice cream at Marble Stone Creamery (lunch) and finally back to hotel to rest.    Hate to be inside on this gorgeous day, but the feet needed a break.

At 5:15 we were off to our dinner show at Dolly Parton's Stampede Show.     We were in a huge arena and immediately served drinks (no alcohol) with a delicious creamy vegetable soup, rotisserie chicken, pork loin, 1/2 herb/basted potato, corn on the cob, biscuit and then warm apple turnovers.    The show was fast and action packed with live buffalo, Texas longhorns, pigs, chickens, dogs, and lots of horses, dancers, costumes, etc.    Our favorite was the grand finale when 10 horses came out bedecked in red, white and blue, their riders in glittery lit-up costumes each holding a large American flag and Dolly singing "America"!

Grand finale

The dinner/show only lasted 1.5 hrs and then rode the bus back to the hotel.    Even though the night was young, most everyone was tired and all heading home tomorrow.    Lots of good bye hugs and happy memories of the past 3 days.     Although the group was small, it was nice to be more intimate and really get to visit with everyone.

Joe and Mark go waaaaay back - hope to see him in FL this winter

Tomorrow we will be heading back to KK....meeting Jim and Lydia in St. Louis at one of their favorite coffee shops.

Tuesday - September 21

 HAPPY 45th BIRTHDAY to PHILIP

Philip and new baby daughter, Maeve Kathryn - July 2016.
Sweet family
May 15, 2021

So proud of this guy - hubby to Annette, daddy to Luke and Maeve, airline captain and instructor, talented craftsmen with all his tools and loves the water.   He's a keeper!

After 1.4" of rain during the night, we were awake early and left at 7:30 for a coffee fix - 1st one (Sweet Bay) didn't open till 10?    So, we walked uptown and found "Ground Up" which is only 6 months old, they roast their coffee beans and had excellent cinnamon roll (Mark) and cranberry orange muffin (me).

After the hot day yesterday, today was only in the 60's and mostly cloudy.    We went to the car and took off for Payne Valley Golf Course (one of 5 courses here that are owned by Johnny Morris, founder and owner of Bass Pro Shops).    Payne Valley (named after the late Payne Stewart) is the only fully-accessed public course in the world that was designed by Tiger Woods.  Just 4 years old and costs $325 to play a round of golf.  The drive was spectacular and the views absolutely stunning.     Connor had told Anne about this place and she asked if we could check it out and get some gifts - it was a real treat for we non-golfers, too.

Here are a few views from Payne Valley...not sure they capture the real beauty

And something really ironic.....I was telling Michael about this place and he said his friend Randy (whom we know from North Carolina) played this course just last week!    Randy thought it was awesome!!!

I checked out some shops when we returned from our golf outing.    Branson Landing is a really neat area along Taneycomo Lake and a great area to shop, eat, walk, etc.

Mark and I had lunch with Jeff, classmate from Fort Worth who planned this reunion in 2020 when 60 had planned to attend but then canceled with Covid.   Now, it's finally happening, but disappointing to have such a small group.    What a nice visit with Jeff and delicious lunch at the White River Fish Co. (no clue where the White River is as we are on Taneycomo Lake)??

Jeff

Then Mark and I were off to my haircut appt. at Body Works which I had scheduled a week ago - trip advisor had top reviews and Crystal did a good job.    Back to the hotel to rest a bit before we were off again.

Around 4:30, the sun came out and felt so good.   At 5:30, we 19 boarded the bus and off to the Dick Clark American Bandstand Theater for the Legends concert.    Out group had a private dinner on the balcony - excellent beef, pork and sides.    The concert started 1 hour later so plenty of time to visit and watch as the theater slowly filled up.   Found out  Debbie and I are 2nd cousins and then others chimed in on who we were related to or knew from  Sublette, Amboy, Dixon, etc.    It was pretty crazy and fun.

Mark, Pat, Debbie and Tom
Debbie and I are 2nd cousins.   My Grandpa and her Grandma are siblings.

Tonight's featured entertainment included Martina McBride, Frank Sinatra, Blues Brothers, Pat Benatar and Kenny Chesney.    It was a very enjoyable show!!!     Great entertainers, singers and dancers.

After we got back to the hotel, we met at The Big Whiskey for drinks and more laughs, reminiscing, etc.....whoaaa...as I finish this blog, it is now almost midnight!    Another fun day and Mark and I are having a fun time with his classmates here in Branson.

Nighty night....

Very few masks down here and even in IL, so many places people were not wearing them even though they are mandated?

I remember some of Mark's classmates from previous reunions, and especially fun to reconnect with Judy and Joe who I first met many years ago thru 4-H (before Mark).   Judy lives in IL and Joe in FL.

My 4-H Buddies
Joe and Judy

12 classmates/spouses rode the charter bus from Sterling (8+hour trip) and the rest of us (7) flew or drove to Branson.

Driving around today we saw sooo many hotels, theaters, restaurants, shops, etc., etc.    Something here for all ages.    It is quite the place and the plan is for Branson to become a new golf destination.   I would say they are well on their way of meeting that goal.   However, Jeff commented at lunch that more and more younger folks are NOT playing golf and numbers are going down?    Sure not the case for our 5 older grandsons who all love the game!

Monday - September 20

Today was all about remembering Patrick on the 2nd anniversary of his passing.

A happy memory from June 7, 2015 when the Campbells were at their first air show
featuring the Blue Angels and Uncle Ryan
We miss him so much but he would be so proud of how Anne, Liam and Connor have carried on...

We left the hotel in Lebanon and found "Judes" coffee shop a few blocks away - another neat place.    We drove 2 hrs. 15 min to Lampe, MO where our next-door neighbors at Cypress Trail live (Rog and Martin).     They have a darling cabin right on Table Rock Lake with gorgeous views.   Forgot how hilly Branson and area are - beautiful country.     It was so good to see them, visit, and enjoy the burgers Rog prepared on her smoker.    We walked down the hill to their little marina with covered slips.    What a neat set up - boat is almost right outside their door, protected from the sun and then all that beautiful water to cruise on.

Rog and Martin
View of Table Rock Lake from their deck

Said our good byes around 3 and we'll be together later in October when we're all back at CT.    They are such great folks and neighbors - perfect 4-hour visit.    And then onto Branson and check in for Mark's 56th class reunion of Newman Central Catholic High School, Sterling, IL.

Settled in the room and then met some of the classmates who started trickling in.    We met for cocktails and dinner (really good buffet) n the hotel (Old Glory room).    There were around 150 classmates (38 are now deceased) but only 14 are here with 5 spouses for a grand total of 19.

14 classmates from the class of '65 - (Mark in the coral shirt)

After dinner we all walked outside (after the HOT day, it was so pleasant before the rain and cooler temps come tomorrow.    Our hotel is situated in the heart of many shops and restaurants (Branson Landing) with condos on upper floors.   It is very nice and every hour on the hour a big water show takes place with fountains reaching high to the sky, fire balls, music, etc.   It was really enjoyable watching the 8:00 show.    We all went into Landshark and sat at 2 big tables, ordered drinks and visited.   At 9:00 we watched that show and then everyone said good night and off to their rooms.    Some had traveled from far and near.
Great water show

Today should be the last of the HOT ones....96 this afternoon in Branson!

Good night FSIL (favorite son-in-law).....we sure miss and love you!

Sunday - September 19

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to MICHAEL and BROOKE

Congratulations on 23 years!!!
And "thank you" for giving us Drew, Davis, Brady and Blair!
Best wishes to these kiddos for many more happy, healthy years together!!!

We nomads are back on the road - loaded up the car including Mark's 1965 yearbook and at 8:40 we were heading out of Kamp Komfort.    Stopped in Grafton, IL for lunch at the Oyster Bar (#1 on Trip Advisor and well worth it) - great shrimp po boys.    Walked to the Grafton Harbor and found looper friends we first saw in early June at Ess Kay in Brewerton, then  North Tonawanda.    Enroute to get Flo in Brewerton, we stopped with the car and visited them in Erie, PA.    Today, we sat on Laurie and Hal's boat (Gemini) and had so much fun catching up  and then Chris (Cashelmara) and Skippy came onboard.    Lots to cover since we were last together in late June.

Sonny, a friend of theirs who is traveling with his wife Brenda on their PDQ (just like Catrina) came onboard and of course, Sonny and Mark enjoyed sharing PDQ stories.    Sonny and Brenda are farmers from VA who bought their boat and started the loop - 1st time boaters....whoaaa....all kinds of stories out there.   The real ironic thing is that we are familiar with their boat ("New Hope") as we knew the previous owners, Mark and Muffie whom we met in Annapolis in 2016.    Then it was called "Catalyst".    We enjoyed Mark and Muffie who now live in Stuart, FL...... another example of our small world

Chris with Skippy, Hal, Laurie

Sonny - PDQ owner

After a very enjoyable 2-hour visit, we said our good byes (they never know when we're going to turn up - but yes, we always let them know we're coming)!   Hopefully Fort Myers will be our next get together.     We still had 3 hours to travel, so....decided to take the ferry across to Portage Des Sioux, MO from Grafton.    Short car/ferry ride of  12 minutes, but smaller than the Drummond Island ferry we took exactly 1 week ago this morning (seems so long ago)!    This ferry ride cut 20 miles from our trip.

We are in Lebanon, MO tonight.    It was another warm, sunny day and ready for some rest and relaxation till we're back traveling tomorrow.    Big lunch, so skipping dinner; well, actually we did take a few cookies set out in the lobby and they were delicious!

Zoom tonight with 9 siblings missing Theresa, Marilyn and Nancy.    Doris had knee replacement on the 14th, so good to get an update on her recovery (painful), Janet helping her sister out with whatever Doris needed done, the bridal shower yesterday, niece Lisa's upcoming wedding, coffee shops and muffins and on and on it went!!!

And then Mass online with Bishop Robert Reed in Boston.

Wishing you all a healthy, happy week!

Saturday - September 18

Hot again - 90.    More summertime weather than mid September.    I drove to Anne's and met 2 of Mark's sisters (Karen and Marilyn) and we were off to Danville for our niece, Sarah's bridal shower.   Karen drove and we stopped along the way at Starbucks for coffees and arrived at 11:45.    Beth (wife of brother Tom) had the shower at her lovely home on the shaded patio.    Delicious lunch, fun games, dessert (nothing bundt cakes) and opened presents.    So nice to be together (1st time since all this covid stuff) and lots of chatter, reminiscing, wedding talk, etc.!

Mark finished waxing Flo!    She looks good!

I packed for our trip tomorrow (Branson, MO for Mark's 56th class reunion) with some stops along the way,   With the weather changes coming, it's a little tricky on what to take - casual and dressy clothes, for hot and cool weather as expecting 90 on Monday and 73 on Tuesday + 70% chance of rain on Tuesday.

We had grilled cheese with bacon and tomatoes for supper - yummy!!!

Friday - September 17

Hot 'n Sunny today - 90!    But what a fun day starting with Kathy and me saying our goodbyes to Claire (and Mike) with big thanks for their hospitality (slumber party) and just being together these past 3 days!

Kathy and I met Sue and Brenda at Crafted Coffee and Brews.    We sat outside and had a great visit - so much to yak about.    Then it was bye bye to Sue and Brenda and Kathy and I drove out in the country to see her farmland, where she grew up, the cemetery, the tiny town of Merna, etc., etc.    It was a great day to be out in the country.

Pat, Brenda, Sue, Kathy

Then Kathy and I met Barb for lunch at Biaggi's - and more yakkety yak.    We all enjoyed our lunches and visit and look forward to being in Florida together in February,

Kathy, Barb, Pat

I took Kathy to the airport for her flight back to Dallas.   It's been such a fun, whirlwind girl time!    Wow, we covered alot of conversation and tracks (eating, shopping, walking, etc., etc.)

I stopped in to see Donna Rae, had a glass of wine and more chatter.    We'll be back together in a few weeks for dinner (Mark, too).

And then, at 3:30, I headed back to KK and Mark who has really been on his own this week.    He has waxed 1/2 of Flo with more of that fun coming!     He has been enjoying the folks here in the park, meeting other campers, sharing their stories, etc.

We walked a little bit around the park - very busy and full tonight.    Our neighbors here in the park are John and Barb formerly from Bloomington and now RV'ers who winter in Naples, FL.   Mark used to work with them at State Farm.    They invited us for dinner tonight and what fun and delicious enchiladas, salad with guacamole and peach gelatin pie - sooo good!   They have a beautiful 5th Wheel and 2 sets of twins - all girls (I first knew Barb from "Mothers of Twins Club").    We had a great visit and hopefully we can get together in FL.    It's been a really fun day and evening!
