Wednesday - September 6

It was nice to have a leisurely morning since we only had 167 miles to travel today + gained back an hour now that we're in the central time zone.    Around 9:00, Blair facetimed and I asked her why she wasn't in school?    She said they had a 2-hour delay cause some bad guy was near her school????    So, she was her usual chatty self and showed me several items (including an NC State cheerleading outfit) that she plans to take this weekend.    Her Mom, Dad, Brady and her friend Ivy are going to Raleigh to see Davis and the football game between NC State and Notre Dame.    So, that should be fun!    We said good bye and at 10:15, we were leaving Deer Ridge (speed limit is 5 MPH and strictly enforced)!!!

Had some rain off and on but just light stuff.    We stopped at the Pilot in Crawfordsville and planned to just get something for a light lunch as we have dinner plans.    When I pulled into the parking lot, I noticed several porta potties???    Hmmm.    Mark had parked Flo around the back of building with the trucks.    We met at the front door and read the sign that said "No restrooms, no showers, no food....."    There's a Subway there but everything was closed off with yellow caution tape.   We talked to one of the clerks and last Saturday, their well went out and the water softening system shut down, so...not a good thing!    We decided to drive the car into town and had lunch at KFC.   On our way into town, we pulled off to side of the road 3x as emergency vehicles went flying by - rescue squads, fire trucks, volunteers?    Not sure where they were going....

Took Mark back to Pilot and we were on our  way - I got gas and he got diesel west of Danville and then met up at Kickapoo State Park in Oakwood.   We are camped along the banks of the Vermilion River and it's a nice sunny, warm, breezy afternoon, but nothing like the heat of the past few days.  Not many campers here but an Airstream from Kentucky pulled in a few campsites away.

The Vermilion River

So, Mark googled about what was going on in Morganton this morning (whatever Blair was talking about)?    Apparently some guy in Madison County (north of Asheville) shot a mail carrier and then stole the mail truck.    This happened yesterday and there was a massive manhunt for him as he drove to Morganton.    He ditched the truck and ran into the woods.    Some of the Burke County schools were put on 2-hour delay this morning as the search continued.    But they got the guy..........and no condition at this time on the mail carrier.    Yikes!   Why would someone steal a mail truck???

Monday, the glass people will come to Kamp Komfort and replace my windshield - this is 2nd time for this to happen.....a rock hit us a few years ago in Asheville (also did damage to the hood of car).    And because I have the heads-up display, they have to replace the whole thing!

Windshield boo boo

We left the campground at 5 and drove to Mark's brother Tom and Beth's home.  The   last time we were here at Kickapoo State Park was June 1, 2019 when Beth was celebrating her retirement with a big party.    The next day we were off to NY and summer on Catrina.    Tom and Beth invited us for dinner tonight    What a treat to have a home-cooked meal prepared by these two who LOVE to cook.    Tom made his wonderful lamb (it was fabulous) and also had new potatoes, broccoli and stuffed mushrooms + chocolate mousse!    We had such a nice evening!    Can't beat these special family times!

Tomorrow we are headed to Flo's IL home - Kamp Komfort (92 miles)!   But first, Beth is picking me up in the morning and we're doing a little hiking, siteseeing and then to her favorite coffee shop!
