Thursday - July 5

Hello from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario and what a fun day we've had.    But first to back track to last night and a fabulous fireworks display over the Niagara River in Tonawanda.    We sat on Catrina's bridge with perfect seats on a beautiful evening.   At exactly 9:45, the skies exploded for 23 non-stop minutes of thrilling bursts of WOW, WOW and more WOW.    Behind us we could see the skies lite up from Niagara Falls.

This morning we had breakfast and then on our way to Canada - just 30 miles away passing all the Niagara Falls signs.      Quick drive thru customs and arrived in Niagara-on-the-Lake with our first stop at Balzacs Coffee Roasters for coffee/latte and we shared a peach muffin.  Whew...another very hot day.    I was totally blown away by the absolutely spectacular flowers everywhere with such vibrant colors.     It is so dry all around upstate NY and with this extreme heat, they would need to water frequently and fertilize.

Just a few of many "flower" pics I took...

We walked thru the beautiful Prince of Wales Hotel dating back to 1864 - just one of many gorgeous inns and B 'n B's in this area.    One more beautiful than the other and unfortunately, no vacancy this 4th of July week.    Since we made these plans last-minute and this is such a lovely charming town to visit, not surprised, but there are so many and all we kept reading online - SOLD OUT!!!

With the intense heat, we moved on and had thought we would tour Fort George, but then thought - "no, too hot to be walking all around outdoors".    We drove to St. Catharine's, the nearest large town of 120,000+ but nothing special - just another big city.

Everywhere we drove in the country were vineyards, vineyards and more vineyards.....and beautiful huge winery estates.    We trusted good ole Trip Advisor and chose "Two Sisters Vineyards" for lunch - oh my, the setting overlooking the vineyards - we sat outside and with a nice breeze and a huge roof, it was very comfortable.    This wine region is more favorable to whites than reds.    We enjoyed our chardonnay and each had delicious different pasta dishes.

GREAT place....

We checked into our Hilton Garden Inn and relaxed a bit then drove a short jaunt to the Collection Outlet Mall of Niagara - HUGE and a very happening place,    Decided we could use some exercise and the temps had dropped (a front went thru) and "supposed" to get some rain tonight?

There's not a lot of restaurants (other than chains and fast-food) close to our hotel, so we ate here at the Hilton and really good - ribs for Mark and flatbread pizza for me.

Tomorrow only a high of 75 - wow, that will be such a welcome relief.    These folks are not used to this extreme heat!
