Saturday - September 8

We had a very big day in the beautiful Adirondacks!!!    Started off with a trip to the Bear Den Coffee Co. for raspberry Danish and coffee/latte and a nice visit with the owner!    Then we were off to Whiteface Mountain, the highest peak in Lake Placid at 4, 864 ft.    For $20 we could drive up the mountain (5 miles) and then hike .02 of a mile up and up and up.    We went part way and that was enough for Mark who does not like heights,    The scenery was fantastic, we got some pics and down we came!

Stopped at the North Pole but New York's is a much smaller version that Alaska with small gift shop and a big area for the kiddies.

Then we were off to Lake Placid about 14 miles away and oh what a neat town and home of the 1932 and 1980 winter Olympics.    Tomorrow is the 1/2 Ironman starting in Lake Placid and winding thru Wilmington, Keene, Jay, etc.    The course includes a 1.2 mile swim in Mirror Lake, a 56 mile bike ride topped off with a 13.1 mile run....which equals a 70.3 mile triathlon.    People and bikes were everywhere but someone told us this is a quiet weekend?    Really???......they have a full triathlon, equestrian events, lacrosse competition, etc. during the season and those bring in even more tourists.

It was a gorgeous day - 62 sunny degrees with no wind and so pleasant to walk the streets and check out the shops.   We saw the hockey rink, all the flags, the field where all the bikes were set and ready to go for tomorrow, etc.

We came back to Wilmington and decided to do an All-American lunch at the A and W Root Beer stand complete with Coney dogs, French fries and root beer in frosted mugs, of course!
Good stuff!

Then to Keene, another small town 10 miles away.    Just a few shops here but 2 very nice furniture stores that had handmade rustic tables, beds, other furniture,    Beautiful but very $$$.
Keene also had 1 restaurant, and 2 bakeries/markets.
Pretty blooms in Keene
St. Bernard's Catholic Church
Excellent homily and singing

Had a wonderful dinner at The Hungry Trout - 5 different ways to have your trout prepared - Mark chose with Grand Mariner sauce and I had the special with scallops, red peppers and a balsamic glaze - both were excellent and we topped it off sharing a maple crème brulee.

Back to the campground and walked as we were so close to getting our 10,000 steps, so after accomplishing that, we are tucked in Flo and will probably be an early night as all the fresh air and walking did us in!    Ha!    It is sooo beautiful here!!!

37 by morning!    Burr......we had on several layers for the mountain trek this morning!   Love this cool, fresh mountain air!
