Seventeen years ago....

A very wet overnight with lots of rain but sure made for good sleeping...
more was in the forecast for today but looks like it has all moved on!

Mark did more logistics of where we're going and one thing for sure - a weekend RV spot is next to impossible this time of year.    There are lots of campgrounds and RV parks, but most cater to smaller units like Daisy, but Flo along with Big Red needs a much bigger site, so the challenge is on...

But before we left for the day, he was able to make reservations thru the end of the month!

We left Colchester around 10 and headed towards Stowe......what a pretty trip but part of it on Smuggler's Notch was "HAIRY' with so many tight curves - Big Red handled it well but the driver had the white knuckles!

We were checking out another bucket list item today and with the help of friends, Bob and Martha, we found the beautiful Stowe Mountain Lodge - gorgeous place and huge.   Unfortunately, it was very overcast and misty rain so we could not see the top of the mountain, but with all the gondolas, ski slopes in the distance and the beautiful lodge and surrounding landscape....so glad we ventured here.

Our view at lunch

This bucket item  criteria was to find a mountain retreat with floor-to-ceiling windows and sit by a roaring fire with a glass of wine or hot toddy watching the skiers do their thing.    Well, obviously no snow in September (and poor visibility), no roaring fire (fireplace hadn't been used recently) and instead of wine or hot toddy, a great maple latte from the Beanery fit that bill.   So overall, in my imagination, I could picture what this would be like in prime ski season!!!

We then drove to the Von Trapp Lodge about 7 miles away where the Von Trapp family made their home back in 1942.    It is beautiful (smaller scale that the Mountain Lodge), but we had a very good lunch at The Lounge with pretty view and then checked out the gift shop and read more about this amazing family which was the result of "The Sound of Music" filmed in 1965.

Drove to Montpelier and although it's the state capital, only has around 8,800 residents.    Some neat old buildings and charming little shops made the downtown a fun place to spend some time.    We also found "LaBaroque" a bakery that is part of the New England Culinary Institute.    We each had a delicious dessert - some chocolate thingy for Mark and my cinnamon caramel macaroon was amazing.

Vermont State Capital

Stopped at Home Depot on our way back to Flo and then ready for some rest, drinks, cheese/crackers, etc.    Been a very enjoyable day soaking up this wonderful Vermont scenery.    We were here in 2012 and also a day trip for lunch last August.

Turned out to be a beautiful evening - went for a long walk in the park.    Just starting to see some bits of fall color....

So concerned about the path Florence will take and all those on the east coast and inland of the Carolinas and Virginia.    Praying big time....
