Wednesday - July 10

WOW....what a WET day here in Alex Bay.  The rain (effects from Beryl) started around 9 and on and off (mostly on) all day.    We went to Windows on the Bay for a very good breakfast.   The guys dropped us off downtown and they went back  to the boat.   Oh my, it was raining so hard - Kathy and I shopped at Buoys Boutique and then went across the street to Coffee Pot Cathy's - my, the street was flooded and we were soaked despite raincoats and umbrellas.    We had coffees and waited for the rain to slow down - but it didn't and it was time to meet the guys and board the Uncle Sam Tour boat for our trip on the Lawrence River and Boldt Castle.

A bus tour and just a few others were doing the tour today - sooo nasty with heavy rain and wind.   Enjoyed the narration by a young lady and then we stopped at The Boldt Castle and remember being here 11 years ago.   BUT so much has been done since that time.    Back in the late 1800's, George Boldt, a millionaire and hotel owner (Waldorf Astoria and Philadelphia).

George hired 2 architects from Philadelphia to build the Boldt Castle on Heart Island for his wife Louise.   After 4 years of construction, Louise died and from TB and he halted all construction and never returned to Heart Island.    It's truly a fascinating story that so many years went by and the castle went in total disarray with weather elements, vandalism, etc.    Little by little thru the years, it is being finished but so much to do with many years of hard work by these expert craftsmen still to come.

We watched some of the Indiana Fever/Washington Mystics game and Caitlin Clark!

Time for dinner at Cavallario's downtown - it was excellent on this rainy night and then back to Catrina.  We enjoyed 1000 Island dressing which originated here with George Boldt serving at his hotels.   More rain coming.....water standing everywhere and so far, 2.5"

Some pics from today...

Mr. Boldt renamed the island from "Hart" to "Heart" and many things are heart related
including these flower beds.
